Haiku Requirements

SIMPLY HAIKU'S SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR HAIKU

Haiku submitted MUST be activity-biased* versus object-biased. Most of what is accepted by publications today are senryu masquerading as haiku, and/or lack a true connection with zôka, nature's creative force. Haiku is not whatever a person wants to encapsulate into three lines. Haiku makes use of aesthetic styles (tools) to forge mood, and unearth a surplus of words. Haiku hints at and leaves room for a reader's subjective interpretation. Kigo is not an illustrative modifier used to enhance a senryu-esque thought. Meter is important to haiku. Indigenous to haiku is the short/long/short metric schemata.

*Activity-biased: about the process of becoming and changing versus a concrete object or objects.

If you are new to writing haiku, understand that it is one of the hardest verse forms to compose. We only showcase the finest haiku.

Sometimes I suggest slight changes. If you have a large ego and resent editing, submit your poetry somewhere else. An editor isn't a "feel good" everything is wonderful "Stepford" rubber stamp ducky.

As a serious academic literary journal it is a privilege to have your haiku published in Simply Haiku. Do your homework. Read haiku published in past issues. If you think your haiku merits a wide audience (over 12,000 readers internationally), submit using our online submission form.

Upon agreeing to publication, Simply Haiku acquires first rights, and retains the right to archive work online for an indefinite period. You, therefore, agree to Simply Haiku republishing your work within the format of the magazine edition your work was accepted for at any time and in any publication format, for both the purpose of being reproduced or sold to the public under the name of Simply Haiku.

Author retains all other rights upon publication. We accept only original, unpublished work, no reprints, except in special circumstances; such as translated work or work that needs wider distribution due to specific political content or restricted distribution rights in the country where it was produced and where we have the authority of the previous publisher.

A nature word in itself used in a short poem, doesn't make it a kigo or make the poem a haiku. It is the intent of the word and the context in which it is used, that makes its use valid. Too many use a nature word as a descriptive modifier, to illustrate a point they are making, without connecting with zoka, the creative force of nature. They use zoka for their poetic means instead of listening and learning from zoka.
